Tax authorities wrong with motor vehicle tax assessments

WILLEMSTAD - The tax authorities have wrongly sent motor vehicle tax assessments to owners of cars. This is reported by Minister of Finance Javier Silvania on his Facebook page. According to the minister, inaccuracies have taken place as a result of which people have wrongly had an assessment.

In connection with the catching up of administrative arrears, motor vehicle tax (MRB) assessments were recently imposed for the years 2018 and 2019. These assessments were imposed on persons and companies that had a registration number registered in their name in those years and the MRB owed was not paid to the tax authorities according to the administration.

"There has been some negligence in the imposition of these assessments, which resulted in the wrongly imposed ones. The cause of this error has been identified and the reduction notices will be sent in the week of July 18 for the assessments that have been wrongly imposed," said Silvania.

According to the minister, motorists who have wrongly received an MRB assessment do not have to file an objection. "If by 1 August still no reduction assessment has been received, an objection to the assessment can be submitted via mrb@gobiernu.cw. In the e-mail, reasons can be given as to why the assessment imposed is incorrect," Silvania writes.

Soon the assessments for the years 2020 and 2021 will also be imposed. Adjusted assessment notices will be used for this, because it was also found that the MRB assessment notice on the back contained incorrect and outdated information. "The tax authorities apologize for any inconvenience and ask for understanding for the enormous task that the service faces to make up for years of arrears in a short time," said Silvania.

The person or company in whose name the license plate is registered is responsible for paying the MRB. If a vehicle is no longer used, for example because the vehicle has been declared a total loss or is parked in the garden, the number plates must be handed in to the tax authorities in the WTC. As long as the plates have not been handed in, MRB remains due. When a vehicle is sold, it is essential to have the registration number transferred to the name of the new owner at both the tax authorities and the inspection room in order to transfer the MRB obligation to the new owner.
