Quarter of CMC waiting list cleared

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has cleared at least a quarter of the waiting list in the past month. At the end of September, the hospital sounded the alarm. The CMC stopped all unnecessary medical treatments for patients of the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) as of October 1.

After an instruction from the Health Inspectorate and an advance of 4.1 million guilders from the government, the CMC decided to resume elective care from 1 November. The money that the SVB had previously made available did not cover all the hospital's costs.

The management of the CMC reported at the beginning of November that, according to the Planning Department, about three hundred operations could take place this month, 240 of which were SVB patients. A total of 421 operations were carried out in the period from 1 to 25 November. Of these, 354 patients were insured through the SVB.

At the end of October, the number of patients on the hospital's waiting list rose to 1,636. With the advance from the SVB, elective care could be resumed from 1 November. However, the advance is not enough to cover the costs for the rest of the year. The CMC has also requested more than four million guilders in extra funds from the Minister of Finance for the month of December.
