Proposal limiting the right to vote has been highly criticized

WILLEMSTAD - In the Curaçao parliament yesterday there was a lot of criticism during the handling of a bill proposal of the Member of Parliament for the opposition party Pueblo Soberano.

The proposal was first made in 2016, but was re-examined yesterday. According to the proposal, only Dutch people born in Curaçao, or Dutch people who have lived in Curaçao for at least five years, could vote. In this way, Pueblo Soberano wants to limit the right to vote.

According to parties PAR and MAN, the proposal is discriminatory. Opposition party MFK wants to expand the right to vote. According to Charles Cooper of that party, non-Dutch nationals who have lived in Curaçao for a long time and pay tax should also be given the right to vote.

According to the MFK, it should also be considered whether Curaçaoans living in the Netherlands can get the right to vote in the local elections.
