Prime Minister Rhuggenaath: “Mixed feelings about General Measure of the Government of the Netherlands”

WILLEMSTAD - Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath says he regrets that the impasse in the Curaçao Parliament had to be ended with the involvement of the Netherlands. The Premier said this after it became known that during a meeting of the Kingdom Council of Ministers it had been decided to impose a General Measure of Government Administration.

That way, Emmilou Capriles should be able to join parliament. According to Rhuggenaath, the Kingdom Council of Ministers proceeded to do this after Governor Lucille George Wout approached the council with a request to intervene.

Ten times in the past period it has not been possible to form a quorum, which means that parliamentary meetings could not take place. The members of the opposition always consciously chose not to be present at the meetings.

Earlier this week, Rhuggenaath indicated that he wanted to enlist the help of the Kingdom Council of Ministers to come to a solution. But after many protests from both the community and politics, the prime minister decided not to make the request.

“The consideration to involve the Kingdom Council of Ministers came from the need that we as government have for parliament to function. That has not been the case for a long time and that while we are in a crisis. There are urgent matters that need attention and there are laws that need to be addressed,” said the prime minister.

According to Rhuggenaath, however, the governor is authorized to make the request on her own initiative. Rhuggenaath: “The governor has recently observed the situation and was concerned about it. I therefore fully understand her decision to request the Kingdom Council of Ministers to intervene."

Rhuggenaath: "It is a shame that due to a lack of maturity we were unable to resolve it internally, but in the end the Curaçao democracy won again."
