Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas Highlights Unity, Responsibility, and Progress in 15th Anniversary Speech of Autonomous Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD - During the official ceremony marking 15 years of Curaçao’s autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas delivered a heartfelt and reflective speech in the heart of Willemstad, calling for unity, shared responsibility, and continued progress for the nation.

Pisas began by recalling the historic decision of 2010, when Curaçao took a major step toward self-governance. “Fifteen years ago, our people declared that we were ready to take responsibility for our destiny,” he said. “The road was not always easy, but we persevered. Today, when we look back, we can say that we have grown — both as a people and as a country.”

A Time for Reflection and Renewal

The Prime Minister emphasized that Curaçao’s 15th anniversary as an autonomous country is not only a time for celebration but also for reflection. “A nation that does not reflect on its path loses direction,” he stated. “Reflection helps us make the adjustments necessary to move forward with dignity and purpose.”

Pisas underscored that autonomy is not a gift, but a collective responsibility that requires unity, correction, and perseverance. He encouraged citizens to believe in their potential to improve and to continue building a Curaçao that thrives with dignity and shared prosperity.

Building Strong Communities from the Ground Up

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to sustainable development, emphasizing that true national progress begins in the neighborhoods. “If our neighborhoods suffer, the country suffers,” Pisas said. “That’s why we will invest in improving infrastructure, affordable housing, neighborhood safety, and essential facilities. We want clean, safe communities where young people can grow with opportunity and strong values — because a strong neighborhood builds a strong nation.”

He also reiterated his administration’s mission to fight poverty and strengthen the social safety net. “Too many families still struggle to meet their basic needs, and that is unacceptable,” he said. “Every person deserves a fair chance in their own country.”

Economic Diversification and Opportunity

Pisas outlined his vision for a diversified economy less dependent on tourism, emphasizing growth in sustainable energy, maritime services, quality tourism, financial services, and the creative industries. These sectors, he noted, will be the “engines of a new economy” that generates employment and improves family income.

He also issued a heartfelt appeal to Curaçaoans living abroad: “Come home. Help us with your knowledge, your skills, and your love for Curaçao. The future is not elsewhere — it is here, and we need you to help build it.”

A Balance Between Economic Growth and Social Justice

Pisas stressed that economic growth must go hand in hand with social progress. “More tax revenue must translate into better education, better healthcare, affordable housing, and infrastructure that serves all — from Banda Bou to Banda Riba,” he said. “Development without inclusion has no value.”

He called for collaboration across all sectors — government, private enterprise, social organizations, and citizens — to work together for national advancement. “Curaçao belongs to all of us. Only through unity can we achieve lasting transformation.”

Unity and Cultural Identity

The Prime Minister spoke passionately about national unity and cultural identity, describing them as Curaçao’s greatest treasures. “Our identity lives in our language, our culture, our music, our cuisine, our history, and our faith in God,” he said. “It is what distinguishes us — but also what unites us.”

Pisas reminded citizens that Curaçao is part of a broader, culturally rich Caribbean region. “We are a small nation, but with great potential to make a difference in our region. We must stay connected, learn from others, and form new alliances across the Caribbean and Latin America — all while remaining faithful to our Curaçaoan roots.”

Looking Toward the Future

As Curaçao looks ahead to its 20th anniversary in 2030, Pisas expressed hope that the progress started under his government — the Pisas II and III Cabinets — will serve as a turning point in the nation’s sustainable development. “Five years from now, I want us to look back and say: yes, the change began here,” he said.

Concluding his address, Prime Minister Pisas reaffirmed his faith in Curaçao’s resilience and divine guidance:

“We have endured much, and we have learned much. With God among us, nothing is impossible. May He continue to bless our nation — that we may go from victory to victory, from progress to greater progress, united and strong.”

“Biba Kòrsou!” (Long live Curaçao!) – he declared, closing the ceremony to warm applause from those gathered to commemorate 15 years of Curaçao’s autonomy.
