WILLEMSTAD - The consumer foundation in Curaçao recently conducted its regular price survey in 22 supermarkets, tokos and minimarkets. The conclusion remains: it still pays to compare prices between stores.
Fundashon pa Konsumidó checked a total of 141 different products on the shelves in mid-June. This concerns the necessary and most commonly used products, such as rice, beans, oil, spreads, sugar and milk, but also hygiene products such as soap, toothpaste and toilet paper.
And guess what? It still makes a big difference where you buy your products. Take a jar of Calve Creamy for example; at Luna Park you pay 5.95 guilders and at Best Buy you pay 9.99. A difference of 4 guilders for a jar of 350 grams.
And costumers want a bottle of cooking oil from Goya, it's better to go to Esperamos than to Centrum. At Esperamos customers pay 13.65 guilders for a bottle of 16 oz, while at Centrum Mahaai and Piscadera customers see 19.12 guilders on the price sticker. A difference of almost 5.5 guilders.
If customers list all the prices of the products, Bon Bini Supermarket turns out to be the cheapest again this time. Of the 141 products, Bon Bini was the cheapest for 44 products. This is followed by Mangusa Hypermarket (22 cheapest) and Mangusa Rio Canario (18 cheapest). Mangusa Hypermarket was the best-sorted supermarket, according to the consumer foundation.
