No quorum for the umpteenth time

WILLEMSTAD - Again, there was no quorum at a Parliamentary Assembly and so Emmilou Capriles's credentials could not be approved for the umpteenth time this morning.

Parliament was scheduled to meet and debate about the animal welfare law, which was initiated by the political party MAN, and about the credentials of Capriles. The latter is necessary so that she can be sworn in by the governor.

Capriles' credentials have been stagnating in parliament for weeks. The opposition systematically boycotts the meetings because they do not want to cooperate in approving the credentials.

President of Parliament Ana Maria Pauletta of the coalition party PAR wanted to try again with the meeting to get the Capriles’ credentials through without the intervention of the Kingdom Council of Ministers in the Hague.

On Friday, the Netherlands issued a General Measure of Government to allow Capriles to enter parliament. According to Undersecretary Raymond Knops, democracy is knowingly and willingly sidelined by a number of MPs.

"Legislation is awaiting consideration in parliament, including agreements with regard to country packages that the Netherlands has made with Curaçao," Knops said.

It is unknown when the governor will intervene with the governmental measure in hand.
