Monk wants to take government to court

WILLEMSTAD - Member of the opposition party Korsou di Nos Tur and chairman of Justice for all Foundation, Carlos Mon will file a complaint against the Curaçao government this week. This complaint is against the entire council of ministers. The reason for this is the recent increase in wage to pay scale 18.

Monk says that his foundation has been watching but he feels called to act since no one else is doing anything.

There are several Members of Parliament, including from the coalition party MAN, who have indicated that they are against the increase. But that is it. It is a superficial position and no correction is required,” said Monk.

“MAN now has the most ministers in the Council of Ministers and can therefore convene a meeting itself," vote against PAR and withdraw the decision, regardless of PAR's reaction. That is principle. If you stand for principle, you must consider that there will be consequences. But we all already know that is not going to happen. This has been going on for two weeks. The MAN faction has since called out that they are against, but no meeting has been called to demand that the decision be withdrawn. Nothing happens at party level either.”

According to Monk, this means that his foundation must now act. “Besides the fact that this decision is immoral, it is also unethical and even illegal and punishable. Why illegal and punishable: they have violated article 32 of the Constitution. This article clearly indicates that if changes are made to the financial provisions of ministers, this must first be submitted to Parliament.”

Moreover, article 52 of the Constitution states, according to Monk, that in the event of a change in the wages of Members of Parliament, this can only be done with two thirds of the votes.
