WILLEMSTAD - Last week, the Council of Ministers (RvM) approved an inquiry into the role of Campo Alegre within the community to determine, among other things, whether the principle of 80 years after ago when the brother was opened, still applies,
Minister of Justice Quincy Girigorie announced this during a recent press conference. Campo was opened as a brothel in 1940 with a specific purpose; namely to regulate and centralize prostitution. After the recent closure of the brothel, prostitution is now taking place in an uncontrolled manner at various locations, including on the Cubaweg. With all its consequences, says Girigorie.
“What we noticed earlier with the phenomenon of trago (drinking) lady, is now happening much more and is now also much more public. It mainly concerns undocumented women and the question is whether it happens safely. What is the consequence of this? Possible contamination of sexually transmitted diseases.”
Anyone who asks Girigorie at this point - even before the investigation is completed - whether the object of Campo is justified, will receive an affirmative answer. “Campo has a certain role within the community, precisely to prevent prostitution from taking place in different places on the island. It offers certain advantages, such as protection. With such a brothel, where there is a doctor who regularly checks the women, we are far ahead compared to other countries in the region,” said the minister.
The research that is being conducted must clearly map out what the current reality is in the field of prostitution in Curaçao, what Campo's role is in this and whether it still applies.
