WILLEMSTAD – Minister Charles Cooper of Traffic, Transportation and Urban Planning has taken a major step toward improving public lighting in Curaçao by signing a new Service-Level Agreement (SLA) with utility company Aqualectra for the 2025–2027 period.
The agreement ensures the structured maintenance of streetlights across the island, with Aqualectra assuming full responsibility for their upkeep over the next three years. The SLA covers the repair of broken lights, preventive maintenance, and a streamlined system for detecting and fixing faults efficiently. It also includes the continued replacement of traditional lighting with LED technology. So far, 14,000 lights have been converted, with another 16,000 scheduled for replacement over the next two to three years.
A dedicated team from both the Ministry and Aqualectra worked closely together to negotiate and finalize the agreement.
Minister Cooper emphasized the vital role of reliable public lighting in ensuring traffic safety, community well-being, and a general sense of security. “A well-lit street contributes to a safer Curaçao—not only for road users, but also for neighborhoods. This agreement reflects our commitment to sustainable and dependable infrastructure for everyone on the island,” he stated.
Although collaboration with Aqualectra is not new, the updated SLA raises service standards by setting clear expectations regarding response times, quality benchmarks, and reporting obligations.
Minister Cooper and Aqualectra are encouraging the public to continue using the available contact channels to report broken streetlights, allowing maintenance efforts to remain focused and effective.
