MFK announces Shalten Hato as the new Minister of Justice

WILLEMSTAD - Shalten Hato will be sworn in as Minister of Justice on Friday March 18. Hato was nominated by the ruling party MFK on 15 July and successfully completed the screening.

Hato completed his law studies in Rotterdam in 2016. In 2017 he started as a State Attorney and worked at various ministries, including the Ministry of Justice. Hato was appointed head of legal affairs policy in 2020 and was responsible for, among other things, the general policy and legal affairs of the Admissions Organization.

Last summer, Member of Parliament Eduard Braam was asked by formateur Gilmar Pisas to become Minister of Justice. In conversation with Governor Lucille George-Wout, Braam was told that he could not be a minister because of a previous conviction for a sexual offense. He decided to withdraw before he could be nominated.

Braam wanted to make himself available again for the ministry and filed a lawsuit against the Curaçao government. The judge ruled that Braam may not be appointed as a minister because of the 2002 conviction.

Prime Minister Pisas has assumed the position of Minister of Justice for the past nine months. The MFK made no secret of its efforts to find a replacement. “During the search, various aspects such as experience, knowledge and rejuvenation of the party were taken into account,” said the MFK.

“Despite his young age, the MFK is convinced that Shalten has the necessary knowledge and experience to bear the responsibility of the ministry,” the party said. The MFK invites people to greet Hato after the swearing in.
