Mauritsz de Kort Assumes Office as Governor of Curaçao in Parliament Ceremony

WILLEMSTAD - In a solemn session of Parliament today, His Excellency Mr. Mauritsz Johan de Kort officially assumed office as Governor of Curaçao. The ceremony marked the formal presentation of the Royal Decree of November 4, 2025, confirming his appointment, and the protocol of oath-taking held before His Majesty King Willem-Alexander on October 29, 2025.

Speaking before Members of Parliament and invited guests, Governor de Kort delivered an emotional and heartfelt address, expressing gratitude, humility, and pride upon taking on the highest office in the country.

“It is with gratitude, emotion, and pride that I accept the office of Governor of Curaçao in this House — our Parlamento di Kòrsou,” he began. “I am deeply aware of the responsibility entrusted to me, and thankful to serve at the heart of our parliamentary democracy.”

Personal Reflection: “Let Me Serve You”

Governor de Kort paid a moving tribute to his late mother, Alva Jacobus, a strong Curaçaoan woman from Scharloo and Pietermaai who raised him alone after his father’s passing.

“She gave me not only the chance to complete my education but also the values that have guided me in life and in my work,” he said. “I regret she cannot witness this day in person — but she is here in my heart and mind.”

De Kort described his appointment as a symbol of hope for Curaçao’s youth, encouraging them to believe that through education, discipline, and perseverance, any dream can be achieved.

Background: A Life Dedicated to Justice

For the past 14 years, De Kort served as a judge in the Common Court of Justice across the Caribbean region. He said that his judicial experience — weighing facts, remaining impartial, and acting without favoritism — has shaped the principles he will carry into his new role.

“These qualities of independence and neutrality will guide me as Governor,” he said. “In this, I find both the strength and the challenge to serve faithfully.”

Role of the Governor: From Colonial Past to Modern Democracy

Reflecting on history, Governor de Kort traced the evolution of the Governor’s office — from its colonial origins to its modern role within a democratic Curaçao.

He emphasized that since the 1954 Kingdom Charter, the Governor has been both the representative of the King and the head of the government of Curaçao, as well as a link between the Kingdom and the island government.

“The Governor is no longer a representative of colonial power, but part of the legitimate government of Curaçao — entrusted with protecting justice and democracy,” he stated.

A Modern and Engaged Governorship

De Kort addressed questions often raised in society about whether the office of Governor is still relevant today.

“The question should not be whether an institution belongs to our time, but whether it evolves with the times,” he said. “As Governor, I intend to embody that evolution — with transparency, integrity, and good governance at the core.”

He outlined his vision of the Governor as a connector, a stabilizing force, and a guardian of good governance within Curaçao and across the Kingdom.

“Governments come and go,” he noted. “But the Governor must remain a stable factor, ensuring continuity and serving as an institutional memory in Kingdom relations.”

Commitment to the People

Governor de Kort promised a modern and approachable style of leadership, engaging directly with institutions, schools, healthcare providers, and citizens.

He also extended a call to dialogue with the media, religious leaders, and consular representatives, recognizing their influence in shaping values and strengthening Curaçao’s social fabric.

“Members of the press — keep me sharp. Religious leaders — pray for me. And consuls — let us work together to build not only peaceful coexistence but a compassionate and engaged society.”

Closing Words of Gratitude and Service

In his closing remarks, Governor de Kort thanked the governments of Curaçao and the Kingdom, the Parliament, the Governor’s Office staff, defense and police services, as well as his family and friends for their support.

He ended with a touching message to his partner, Rik, expressing deep appreciation for his love, courage, and constant support.

“We may not be a traditional family, but ours is built on love, trust, and strength. Thank you for always standing by me.”

As he concluded his address, Governor de Kort’s final words captured the spirit of his mission:

“To the people of Curaçao: let me love you. To the people of Curaçao: let me serve you.”

Long live Curaçao.
