Major deficit and no reforms in 2021 draft budget

WILLEMSTAD - The draft budget for 2021 shows that Curaçao will have a deficit of 681.3 million guilders next year. This is evident from the draft budget for 2021 presented to the Parliament of Curaçao on the second Tuesday of September, which is traditionally the opening of the Parliament year. All Parliaments in the Dutch Caribbean had their ceremony last Tuesday which is a week before the opening of the Parliament year in the Netherlands.

For the time being, Curaçao does not have permission from the Kingdom Council of Ministers to deviate from the financial standards in the Financial Supervision Act.

The Advisory Council regrets that the 2021 budget does not contain any reforms. Reforms are needed to manage the impact of the corona crisis. This requires help from the Netherlands and the Curaçao population for innovation, unity, and hope, according to Governor Lucille George-Wout during the opening of the new Parliament year.

According to the government, the processing of reform plans and any matching investment program still takes place by 'reprioritization by memorandum of amendment and / or supplementary budget'.
