THE HAGUE - The Undersecretary of Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops answered the question of the Member of the Dutch Parliament for the largest government party VVD Andre Bosman. Bosman wants the Netherlands to withdraw from the Statute of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and therefore end the kingdom relations with the Dutch islands in the Caribbean.
According to Knops this plan presented by Bosman cannot be achieved. Nor will the Netherlands be able to unilaterally withdraw from the Statute.
Knops remined Bosman that the right to withdraw is reserved for the islands. That was agreed as unwritten law after the entry into force of the Statute in 1954, when the process of independence of Suriname was underway, Knops said.
