Justice ministers signal imbalance

ORANJESTAD - The semi-annual Judicial Four-Party Consultation (JVO) considered the capacity problem that the countries experience in certain organizations.

Various Dutch investments in, among other things, cross-border and subversive crime provide reinforcement. “At the same time, an imbalance is experienced between local organizations and organizations that have been strengthened, which sometimes causes the chain to stall. During the JVO, the four ministers discussed the causes of this imbalance. In the coming period, this will be discussed further at official level,” said the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security.

The JVO was attended by the Ministers of Justice of the Netherlands (Yeşilgöz-Zegerius), Aruba (Tjon), Curaçao (Hato) and Sint Maarten (Richardson). For the first time since the start of the corona pandemic, the consultation took place physically in Aruba, chaired by Aruba.

The countries within the kingdom work closely together to combat crime. According to Minister Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, who is also responsible for the justice chain in the Caribbean Netherlands, cooperation with the countries in the Caribbean region is essential.

During the JVO, various subjects were discussed with regard to improving the law enforcement chain. Migration has also been discussed. Cooperation is important for well-functioning immigration chains in the Countries. Among other things, it has been decided to extend the pilot 'traveling with sedula', which will allow residents with Dutch nationality to travel in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom with the local identity document 'the sedula'. In addition, the continuation of cooperation in the field of combating human trafficking and human smuggling was discussed.
