WILLEMSTAD - Major tensions are brewing within the ruling party Movementu Futuro Korsou (MFK), as an internal split appears imminent between members supporting Finance Minister Javier Silvania and those demanding his resignation following his heated dispute with Alfonso Trona of the PNP.
According to party insiders, a small faction within the MFK remains loyal to Silvania, even if that loyalty risks collapsing the current governing coalition. While they reportedly do not agree with everything Silvania has said, they have refused to take steps toward his dismissal.
The majority of MFK members, however, are said to be deeply dissatisfied with Silvania’s conduct, describing his behavior as disrespectful and divisive. Discussions have already taken place in Parliament about whether to file a motion of no confidence against the finance minister, though MFK’s leadership has not yet decided on a formal course of action.
The government is now scrambling to preserve the coalition — even considering possible collaboration with an opposition party to maintain stability.
The political turmoil erupted two weeks ago after the leak of an audio recording capturing a fierce argument between Silvania and Trona. In the recording, Silvania accuses Trona of corruption, prompting Trona to retaliate with derogatory remarks about Silvania’s sexuality. The exchange quickly escalated into mutual insults, sparking public outrage.
A group of Silvania’s supporters plans to stage a protest on Friday outside Parliament during a scheduled session addressing the controversy surrounding the leaked audio.
