WILLEMSTAD – Over the past three years, the Curaçao Tax Administration has made significant improvements in digital services, tax compliance, and operational efficiency, according to a recent evaluation by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The introduction of a revamped website, a toll-free information hotline, and a dedicated customer service department has improved accessibility for taxpayers.
Electronic tax filings and digital payment methods are now widely accepted, making it easier for residents to fulfill their tax obligations. Additionally, the registration process for new taxpayers has been streamlined. Advanced analytical tools and dashboards have also been implemented to monitor tax revenues and operational performance, leading to more informed decision-making.
However, challenges remain. The lack of a comprehensive risk management strategy and limited integration between different departments continue to hinder efficiency. One of the biggest concerns is the significant backlog in tax and social security collections, which currently exceeds 3 billion guilders. According to the IMF, better interdepartmental cooperation is needed to improve tax compliance and collections.
To address these issues, the 2025 strategic plan prioritizes the implementation of an advanced risk management system and further automation of processes. The Tax Administration is also working on a new organizational structure to enhance efficiency and ensure a fairer and more sustainable tax collection system.
