WILLEMSTAD - Patients continue to suffer from the closure of the operating room at St. Elizabeth Hospital (Sehos). The hospital maintains that it does not have enough money to run it. The government does not intervene because it first wants clarity about hospital finances.
In the meantime, the patient is the victim and the waiting list increases with 90 operations per week. 181 operations were scheduled in the period from 10 July to 17 July. The hospital had to cancel 90 operations. Next week 100 operations will be postponed.
Chairman of the Association of Medical Specialists Curaçao (VMSC) Alexander Saleh says about this: “I have not heard anything specific about how this measure affects patients. But of course it remains naive to think that it does not entail misery. "
The question remains why public health minister Suzanne Camelia-Römer does not intervene. But she still says she's waiting for her inspection department to investigate hospital finances.
“I am awaiting the inspector. A minister cannot just take measures. That is why I have ordered the Inspector to check this and I expect clarity soon. The SOAB is also involved to support the Inspector for the financial part. "
The minister said earlier that she does not agree with the hospital that they are not getting enough funds from the government.
Hospital director Anthon Casperson says that they cooperate with the inspection. “The inspector has asked for different documents, and this has all been given to him by Sehos. On Wednesday, the hospital sent the inspection the second progress report with detailed information about all financial flows. By gaining more insight into the financial flows, the hospital board wants to be able to show where these financial deficits arise, where the budget goes, and therefore that the board has made a correct and considered decision.
