Former Prime Minister Schotte must pay or remain in prison longer

WILLEMSTAD - The Court of Appeals has ratified the decision of the Court of First Instance in the confiscation case against former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte. The so-called confiscation case is a result of the Babel case. In that case, Schotte was convicted of accepting bribes, forgery, and money laundering.

Schotte was sentenced to three years in prison, six months were conditional. The Public Prosecution Service wanted to reclaim the money, and also more improperly obtained money. That is why a confiscation case was started.

After the Court of First Instance ruled in favor of the Public Prosecution, Schotte appealed. It is not clear yet if the former prime minister will take his case to the Supreme Court in the Netherlands.

Schotte has been in prison since the end of 2018.
