WILLEMSTAD - Former minister George Jamaloodin has been sentenced to 28 years in prison. The court finds that Jamaloodin has ordered the assassination of the popular politician Helmin Wiels, who was shot on a beach in Willemstad in 2013.

The Public Prosecution Service had demanded 30 years in prison against the former Minister of Finance. According to the judge, the fact that this is has political motives makes this case weigh heavier.

With the sentencing of Jamaloodin there is no end to the Maximus case, as the investigation into the clients and intellectual authors behind the controversial murder of Wiels is called. Indeed, the OM believes that Jamaloodin did not act alone and received money from financiers to plan the murder.

The motive for the murder was probably Wiels' involvement in the gambling sector in Curaçao and Sint Maarten. Just before his death, Wiels delivered a speech in which he accused that sector of scam and tax evasion. He then waved a file that he would incriminate different people if something happens to him.
