Education Union DOEN announces major action on October 5th

WILLEMSTAD - The education union DOEN will take to the streets on October 5th to protest against the Pisas government, which they accuse of not giving priority to education. Marbella Felipa, president of the teacher's union, says that education can no longer be ignored.

If the government doesn't prioritize education, the union will mobilize its members for a large-scale action.

This call comes after the union unsuccessfully attempted, after multiple tries, to schedule a meeting with the director of the Public Education Service and government officials, including the Secretary-General and the Minister of Education. The union wanted to present its heat plans at this meeting.

The union is demanding that every classroom be equipped with an air conditioning system and that structural tropical schedules be implemented due to the changing climate and the current heatwave on the island.

Felipa explains that while it's understandable that the government cannot install air conditioning in all classrooms within a day, what they do want is a plan, a budget, and a timetable.

If the government doesn't respond to these plans, an education action will take place on October 5th, the International Day of the Teacher. Details regarding how this will look and where and when it will take place will be announced in due time so that everyone can prepare.
