WILLEMSTAD – Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof is set to visit Curaçao in May, according to MFK leader and outgoing Prime Minister Gilmar ‘Pik’ Pisas. He confirmed the upcoming visit in an interview with Curacao.nu following his party’s landslide election victory.
"We have an agreement that he will come to Curaçao in May," Pisas stated. He also reassured that Schoof would receive a warm welcome. "Minister Schoof doesn’t need to worry—I will be here to receive him," he said.
Strengthening Relations with the Netherlands
Pisas emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with the Netherlands, dismissing any notion of strained relations. "We have no issues with the Netherlands at all. Every Thursday, we engage in discussions—either at a governmental or administrative level," he explained.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that Curaçao still relies on Dutch support for its development. "We need help, that’s a fact. The Netherlands is one of the strongest economies in Europe, and we must learn from them," he said.
Continued Economic Growth and Stability
Pisas reaffirmed that his party, Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK), will continue its current policy direction, focusing on economic growth. He ruled out the possibility of a referendum on Curaçao’s constitutional status, stressing that cooperation within the Kingdom remains effective and beneficial.
"The partnership within the Kingdom is working well and delivering results," Pisas stated. "We just need to continue working together. That’s how we achieve good outcomes for Curaçao."
Schoof’s visit in May is expected to further strengthen the cooperation between the Dutch and Curaçaoan governments, focusing on economic development and governance.
