WILLEMSTAD - The Prime Minister of Curaçao Eugene Rhuggenaath unexpectedly canceled his trip to the Netherlands on Friday due to an impending appointment. Next week, Rhuggenaath, together with two other Curaçao ministers, would consult with Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Undersecretary Raymond Knops (Kingdom Relations) about a cooperation for improving the financial situation in Curaçao.
On Thursday, however, he was informed that the Dutch government wants to impose a budgetary instruction on Curaçao during a Council of Ministers next week. That means that the Netherlands will intervene in the island's finances. A proposal for this has already been made on 1 April this year by the Financial Supervision College, which monitors the finances of the former Antilles.
Rhuggenaath hoped that the signing of further cooperation would remove the need for such an instruction. He said Friday that the trip was canceled because there is no longer any reason to talk about a help plan.
