Curaçao gets reprimanded again because of human rights in SDKK

WILLEMSTAD - The government of Curaçao has been reprimanded again by the court of justice because of human rights violations. A Venezuelan woman was placed in isolation because she would otherwise come into contact with convicted criminals. Curaçao must therefore pay compensation.

Imprisoning aliens between criminally convicted prisoners is a violation of Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights, according to a lawsuit in June.

According to the judge, what is also not allowed is to undergo the detention of aliens in complete closed isolation. This is also contrary to the provisions of Article 5 of the ECHR and is not permissible. According to the court, the Curaçao government has therefore acted unlawfully against the Venezuelan woman.

It has thus been established that the detention of foreign women in the SDKK is still not in order. Despite another judge giving the justice minister the benefit of the doubt in a case in which Venezuelan men filed a lawsuit for their imprisonment in Block 1 of the SDKK.

In addition, the court deems it plausible in this case that the woman suffered immaterial damage as a result and awarded her an amount of three hundred guilders as an advance on the compensation to be determined in fairness, being an advance of 25.00 guilders per day.
