Curaçao calls conditions for loans "completely unreasonable"

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao government is angry about the conditions that The Hague has set for new, so-called corona loans. According to the Eugène Rhuggenaath’s cabinet, part of the conditions completely conflicts with the rights that are guaranteed within the Kingdom for Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten. This affects democracy, says the government.

Curaçao is angry about the condition of agreeing to the establishment of an institute in the Netherlands with Dutch experts that will take decisions in the next seven years that will intervene directly in the communities of Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten. Curaçao considers the conditions imposed by the Netherlands to be completely unreasonable and totally inappropriate within the way in which the countries in the Kingdom treat each other.

The Netherlands wants the yes of Curaçao within a few days, otherwise it will not receive a new corona loan. The conditions were sent to Willemstad on Monday. On Friday, the Kingdom Council of Ministers will discuss a new loan for millions for Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten. Curaçao thinks that is far too tight.

The corona loans are intended to alleviate the financial problems caused by the corona crisis on the islands. The Netherlands sets conditions on the loans to implement reforms that, according to Undersecretary of Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops are "badly needed" and aim to reform the economic and financial policies of the countries in order to make them more resilient to any new crises.
