COVID-19 Update: “Nothing illegal by tracing phone signals; confirmed cases remain at 16”

WILLEMSTAD - Epidemiologist Dr. Izzy Gerstenbluth indicated this morning that 351 have been tested so far. 137 are men and 214 are women. Curaçao’s confirmed cases remain at 16. 13 are now safe. One is still in the hospital, one is in monitored isolation and as is already known one has died.

Currently thirteen are being actively monitored and there are 24 in travel-related quarantine. Navy officers who arrived last weekend are also in quarantine and are being monitored daily.

Dr. Gerstenbluth that the data they received from UTS Digicel and BTP is not about individuals. “We cannot see what you are doing on your phone or whose signal it is. We look at the signal to see where people come together to visualize how they move across the island. This cannot be traced back to a person,” says the doctor this morning during the daily briefing.

Gerstenbluth also indicated that if there are fewer than 15 signals in one place, it is not reported. If it is more, it will be reported. “This now gives us an idea of how, with easing, the movements around the island is changing, so we can plan for the future and if there is a second wave.

“You see 50-60 percent fewer movements compared to March 15. Each measure ensures less movement, so that we have an idea of what effect each measure has.”
