Women play an important role in creating, promoting and carrying forward human civilization with their hands both creating history and upholding civilization. Throughout history, without women's liberation and progress, there would be no human liberation and progress.
Since its founding in 1921, the Communist Party of China (CPC) has remained committed to women’s liberation and development and gender equality, and women truly “hold up half the sky” in economic and social development. Upholding gender equality, among other basic national policies, has been incorporated into the CPC’s political program. In the new era, Chinese government has emphasized safeguarding women’s lawful rights and interests and promoting women’s well-rounded development as integral components of Chinese modernization. Thanks to years of hard work, China has secured historic achievements and seen historic changes in the domestic cause of women.
We have won the largest battle against poverty in human history, and thereby brought moderate prosperity to 690 million women, achieving ahead of schedule the poverty reduction goal of the U.N.’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We take women as the key targets of poverty alleviation, and ensure that impoverished women have enough food and clothing, and have access to compulsory education, basic medical care, and housing security. We have reduced maternal mortality ratio by nearly 80 percent since 1995, and joined the leading upper-middle-income countries in core indicators for maternal and child health. Today, women in China make up more than 40 percent of the workforce, more than half of internet start-up founders, and more than 60 percent of all medalists in the past four Summer Olympic Games. On the new journey of Chinese modernization, every woman is equally important as a man.
Promoting the development of women's cause is the common responsibility of the international community, and the paths towards gender equality and women’s well-rounded development across the world have been long and arduous. In today’s world, complex challenges still hamper their all-round development.
From October 13 to 14,2025,China convened the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing. Chinese president Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the meeting and delivered a keynote speech. Dozens of heads of state and government, leaders of parliament, deputy prime ministers, ministerial-level officials, heads of international organizations and friends from around the world attended the meeting. The meeting brought parties together to renew the spirit of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, provide new impetus for promoting gender equality globally and the all-round development of women, and jointly build a community with a shared future for humanity.
China advocates that the international community build consensus and carry out concerted efforts. Firstly, we should jointly foster an enabling environment for women’s growth and development, upholding the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and must safeguard world peace. Second, we should jointly cultivate powerful momentum for the high-quality development of women’s cause, proactively addressing the imbalance and inadequacy of women’s development around the world, enable all women to share the benefits of economic globalization. Third, we should jointly develop governance frameworks to protect women’s rights and interests, improving institutions and laws and striving to afford all women full and equal enjoyment of various rights. Fourth, we should support them in assuming their historic responsibilities, enabling them to play a substantive role in global governance, creating broad cooperation platforms for women from all countries.
The world is undergoing accelerating changes unprecedented in a century, and the global women's cause faces both opportunities and challenges. Promoting gender equality is not a task that any one country can accomplish alone and thus it needs the support of a strong and united multilateral system. China is willing to take more concrete actions to accelerate the new process of women's all-round development, and jointly create a better future for the human race.
