Contrary to statement Prime Minister: Knops is hopeful, but no agreement yet on Curaçao corona loans

THE HAGUE - There is no agreement yet between the Netherlands and Curaçao on new loans to mitigate the consequences of the corona crisis on the island. Undersecretary Raymond Knops announced this on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath said an agreement had been reached.

According to the undersecretary, there are "hopeful signals", but "the negotiations are still ongoing". In early July, the Netherlands imposed conditions on Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten for a new, third 'corona loan'.

According to Undersecretary Raymond Knops of Kingdom Relations, the countries can only receive money on the condition that structural reforms are implemented.

At first, the islands did not agree because the conditions of the Netherlands would affect the autonomy of the countries. In the past period, there has been a lot of negotiation between The Hague and Willemstad.

Rhuggenaath wrote in a letter to the parliament of Curaçao on Wednesday that his government has issued "the political commitment" to continue.
