Coast Guard patrols continue

WILLEMSTAD - In response to several reports from citizens of dangerous sailing behavior of 'seadoos' (watercraft) and other vessels at sea, the Coast Guard will carry out targeted patrols soon. In recent weeks, the Coast Guard team has been patrolling the most visited bays and beaches on both the east and west of the island.

The patrols are carried out in collaboration with the port security inspection, the Curacao police force, and customs. The authorities have inspected many boats and seadoos for existing valid shipping documents, COVID-19 measures and sailing behavior at beaches and bays. The Coast Guard has been lenient in the past period and the people who have committed violations have often only received a warning. In addition, the coast guards have made the persons aware of what they are required by law to comply with.

The Coast Guard will carry out stricter inspections at the following checks and will also issue fines. In the worst case, the vessel will be seized. Always keep to the rules and keep the ship’s documents, observe the COVID-19 measures such as social distancing and no gathering of more than 25 people on board vessels. Vessels must always adhere to the number of persons on board as indicated in their ship's documents.

The Coast Guard advises all boat owners to maintain their boat regularly. The owners must make sure they have enough safety and rescue equipment on board such as: life jackets, flashlight, first aid kit, enough water, fire extinguisher, VHF radio or charged mobile phone. Prevent breakdowns and a dangerous situation at sea with the boat. In case assistance is needed, boat owners can call the Coastguard at number 913.
