WILLEMSTAD – Dutch Foreign Minister Ruben Brekelmans met yesterday with Curaçao Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas, Bonaire Governor Edison Rijna, and a representative of Aruba Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes to discuss regional developments, including the recent U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean Sea.
Minister Brekelmans stressed that the U.S. operations are focused primarily on counter-narcotics efforts in international waters and that the Kingdom of the Netherlands is not directly involved. At the same time, he emphasized that the Netherlands remains in close dialogue with relevant parties to protect the Kingdom’s interests.
“We are one Kingdom. Especially now, it is crucial that we inform each other quickly, fully, and consistently,” Brekelmans stated. “That way we remain collectively alert, provide clarity and reassurance to our citizens, and safeguard our economies.”
Caribbean leaders underlined that the situation is felt more directly in the region, making clear and timely communication essential to keeping residents and visitors well-informed.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to closely monitor developments, strengthen existing communication channels, and ensure coordination across all parts of the Kingdom.
