WILLEMSTAD - The recent arson at the Tax Office in Curaçao may have to do with an internal investigation into fraud.
Four employees of the Tax and Customs Administration are currently on mandatory leave due to the internal investigation. Documents related to the ongoing investigation were lost due to the fue. This was probably also the purpose of the arson. The affected building in Willemstad is the only tax office on the island.
The police only announced after a few days of investigation that there had been arson. On a published video it can see how a car drives to the building around 3 o'clock in the night from Wednesday 21 to Thursday 22 August. Two men get out and then quickly left again.
A short time later the fire starts in the building. A reward of 5000 guilders (about 2500 euros) was offered for finding the perpetrators.
Last week the police found the car that was used at the arson. It is a black Chevrolet that was stolen a week earlier.
The damage to the tax office is considerable. Some services, including late payment, have suffered severe fire damage. The building is also in bad shape.
