Aqualectra Begins Testing Battery Energy Storage System on Curaçao’s Grid

WILLEMSTAD – This week, Aqualectra has started testing its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on the island’s electricity grid, marking what the company calls a crucial step in its mission to provide more stable and reliable energy for all customers.

The integration of BESS into the power network represents a milestone in a process that Aqualectra has been working toward for more than two years. The system is designed to store surplus wind energy and release it during periods of low production, helping to stabilize fluctuations in renewable energy supply.

“By connecting our Battery Energy Storage System to the grid, we are moving closer to ensuring stability and fewer power interruptions, especially during the hotter months when electricity demand is at its peak,” the company said in a statement.

Cutting-edge technology

The batteries use advanced technology to safely store energy, making it available for use whenever needed. This means customers can expect greater security of supply and less disruption, even when power generation temporarily drops.

While the connection process has been carefully planned and prepared in detail, Aqualectra noted that such technical operations are always complex. As a result, there is a small chance of brief outages while the system is being tested. The utility assured the public that its team of highly trained technicians is working to ensure the tests proceed smoothly and with minimal inconvenience.

Regional leader in renewable energy

With the installation of BESS, Curaçao positions itself as one of the first countries in the Caribbean to implement such a system. According to Aqualectra, the project not only strengthens the island’s power grid but also reduces dependence on traditional fossil fuels and represents a major step toward a more sustainable future.

The company emphasized that BESS reflects its broader commitment to contribute to the community of Curaçao by providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable water and electricity. Additional projects and investments are already planned to further enhance services for customers in the coming years.
