American soldier detained in Venezuela

CARACAS - Venezuela detained a U.S. Marine officer late last month. According to international media, the American had traveled to the country during leave on his own initiative. The reason for the soldier's detention remains unclear.

John Kirby, the White House National Security Advisor, confirmed the arrest, stating that the U.S. is in contact with Venezuela to gather more information. The U.S. State Department has also confirmed that they are closely monitoring the soldier's detention.

The arrest comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and Venezuela. Recently, elections were held in the South American country, with President Nicolás Maduro declaring himself the winner, a result not recognized by the opposition, the U.S., or the European Union.

On Monday, the U.S. seized one of Maduro's planes in the Dominican Republic, claiming its purchase violated American sanctions. Maduro called the action "piracy."

The U.S. State Department has advised its citizens against traveling to Venezuela, warning of the risks, including "unlawful detention."
