Air traffic controllers in Curaçao discuss cybersecurity

WILLEMSTAD - In light of the increasing threat of cyber-attacks, a seminar on cybersecurity within the aviation sector was organized last Friday by the Dutch Caribbean Air Navigation Service Provider (DC-ANSP).

This event took place at the Renaissance Wind Creek Resort and was held for the first time in three years. According to the organizers, the seminar drew attention due to the crucial importance of digital security for air traffic control and the broader aviation industry.

The CEO of DC-ANSP, Micilia Albertus-Verboom, emphasized the seriousness of the risks that cyber-attacks pose to the already vulnerable aviation sector, with implications extending beyond just financial damage – it involves the safety of human lives. The government states that it is developing a strategy to better equip Curaçao against such attacks, including the formation of robust legislation.

Keynote speaker John Sileo shared his personal experiences with data theft and stressed the importance of awareness around cybersecurity at an individual level within organizations. The subsequent lectures, including those from experts from Fox-IT, IATA, and the US FAA, echoed Sileo's call by emphasizing how crucial rapid detection and response to cyber-attacks are for aviation safety.

The speakers unanimously conveyed the message that complete protection against cyber-attacks is an illusion and that a proactive attitude and sound crisis management are essential. The concluding panel discussion provided further insights and concrete examples highlighting the urgency and complexity of cybersecurity in aviation.

The seminar, attended by approximately 100 participants from Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, and the Netherlands, as well as speakers from Canada, the Netherlands, and the US, was considered by the organizers a successful meeting that affirmed the need for ongoing attention to cybersecurity in the aviation industry.
