NEW YORK - Curaçao youth player Sunayro Martina signed a professional contract with the New York Yankees yesterday. Details about this have not been disclosed.
Martina was born in the Netherlands but moved with his Curaçao parents to the island in 2014. Only then did he start playing baseball, with coach Sixto Laker's Montaña Abou team.
Four years later, in 2018, Martina started pitching and in 2020 he was accepted into Henry Martinez's pre-talent Academy, HMA.
At a tournament in Colombia, Martina impressed international scouts and moved to the Dominican Republic for six months. Upon returning, Martina played with the youth of Firebirds Curaçao and in April reached an agreement with the NY Yankees.
