WILLEMSTAD - On the Day of the Teacher, the Curaçao Business Association (VBC) has penned a letter advocating for improved education for children. The organization asserts that by focusing on the quality of education, children will have greater opportunities in their future careers.
VBC believes that disparities in opportunities already exist within Fundamental Education. The association highlights the contrast between schools, noting that some schools see many students progressing to havo/vwo (higher-level education) while others see all students opting for vsbo (lower-level education). VBC argues that the root of the problem must be addressed because the chances of a bright future for a 12-year-old child are already unequal.
Additionally, VBC states that there is indeed expertise on the island but that it is not being adequately encouraged. Many teenagers pursue higher education in the Netherlands, resulting in a diminishing pool of local talent. VBC also emphasizes the need to focus on education in the technical sector.
Beyond the cognitive perspective, VBC highlights the social situation of children. Quality education enables a child to develop and make better choices, which are crucial in society.
DOEN, the teachers' union, is staging a day-long protest to voice their concerns about education. Teachers are expressing their frustration over the lack of prioritization of education and are striving for more respect for their profession, improved working conditions, and enhancements in the quality of education. According to the union, these actions will not harm the students.
