U.S. Consulate General warns all U.S. citizens in Curaçao: Demonstration Alert

Location: Curacao: Gathering points include, but are not limited to Isla Refinery, Punda District, and routes between the points.

Event: A demonstration protesting salary cuts and layoffs at Curacao’s Isla Refinery is taking place Wednesday, June 24, 2020 beginning at approximately 12:00 p.m. The demonstration was not announced beforehand nor have demonstrators announced an end time.

U.S. government personnel and U.S. citizens are advised to avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence.

Actions to Take:
• Avoid the area near Isla Refinery, Punda District, and all routes between those points.
• Avoid crowds.
• Avoid demonstrations.
• Monitor local media for updates.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Keep a low profile.
• Review your personal security plans.
