Update coronavirus in Curaçao: “Measures still in effect”

WILLEMSTAD - If there are still no new confirmed infections fourteen days after the first infections, we can think about phasing out measures. This is according to Curaçao’s epidemiologist Dr. Izzy Gerstenbluth.

He emphasizes that the supply from risk areas has virtually stopped. “If this is fully guaranteed and we have some degree of certainty that we remain stable, then we can think about relaxing measures on the island itself. The epidemiologist states that we now have three confirmed infections, but we are not there yet.

“We must now evaluate how things are going now. The influx of risk areas has virtually stopped. If this is fully guaranteed, if we have any degree of certainty that we will remain stable, we could think of de-escalating. That is not yet necessary. This is not about opening borders, there are stages depending on how stable the situation remains. The bottleneck is the capacities of healthcare. 5% of the infections are very dangerous for health, with 150 infections the capacity of the ventilation has already been exceeded,” says Dr. Gerstenbluth.

Vice Prime Minister Suzanne Camelia-Römer who is also the Minister of Public Health announced today that the schools will remain closed until further notice. The government is working with the school boards to see what will happen with the exams.
