WILLEMSTAD - The UNESCO-funded project Tailor-Made Heat Maps for Caribbean Island States officially launched with kickoff meetings attended by project leaders, technical experts, and UNESCO national commissions from Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and Jamaica.
This collaborative initiative focuses on creating satellite-driven climate heat maps and analyzing local temperature data to enhance climate resilience and adaptation in these island states. The project addresses the rising threat of extreme heat, with particular attention to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, school children, public transport users, and tourists, who make up a large portion of the Caribbean islands’ populations.
Led by climate and youth advocates Muskaan Khemani from Curaçao and Oriana Wouters from Aruba, the project aims to ensure accessible climate data. It receives support from the Metabolic Foundation in Aruba and Climate Rights and Justice International (CRJI) in Barbados.
