WILLEMSTAD – Traffic safety on Curaçao remains a growing concern, as three women have lost their lives in separate accidents within less than two weeks.
The most recent fatal victim is 46-year-old Mery Maria Cathalina De La Peña, born in Colombia on March 8, 1979. She passed away last Saturday night after a head-on collision between two vehicles on Sta. Rosaweg.
The accident occurred around 8:30 PM. When police arrived at the scene, they found a woman unresponsive, while another injured individual was bleeding from the face and complaining of internal pain. Both victims were rushed to the Emergency Department at Curaçao Medical Center, where De La Peña was later confirmed deceased.
Earlier Fatalities
Just a day earlier, on Friday, January 31, an 81-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by a car while crossing near Goisco. The impact threw her several meters forward, and she landed on her stomach. Despite efforts by doctors at the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
The first fatal traffic accident of the year occurred on January 21 at the intersection of Frater Radulphusweg and Nijlweg. A 77-year-old woman was killed when a driver ran a red light and crashed into her vehicle, causing fatal injuries.
Call for Safer Driving
All three victims—aged 46, 81, and 77—were women, raising renewed concerns about road safety. These tragic incidents have led to public calls for safer driving behavior. Authorities are urging drivers to reduce speed, obey traffic signals, and yield the right of way to prevent further tragedies on the island’s roads.
