WILLEMSTAD – The political party Trabou pa Korsou (TpK) has released its election program, presenting a comprehensive vision for the future of Curaçao. The party’s platform focuses on addressing social issues, improving the economy, and advancing sustainability. Central to their message are reforms in areas such as the AOV (Old Age Pension), minimum wage, taxation, tourism, and the environment.
Social Welfare and Minimum Wage
TpK proposes a substantial increase in the AOV pension to ensure that it meets the basic minimum standard as set by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). The party insists that no one should live in poverty, and urges citizens to save for their future.
Regarding the minimum wage, TpK calls for a sector-based approach. The party suggests creating a salary table that accounts for education, experience, and type of work. This system would allow the government to define fair wages, encouraging individuals to pursue further education.
Financial Reforms
On the topic of tax reforms, TpK strongly opposes the recent cancellation of old tax debts, labeling it as unfair and discriminatory. The party argues that these debts should be reinstated, stating that it is unjust to forgive them when there are people who have consistently paid their taxes.
TpK also advocates for a complete overhaul of the tax system. The party believes that recent financial measures have been improvised and that a clearer and more transparent system is needed, including individual account managers for tax services to assist the public.
Economic Vision for Curaçao
TpK envisions a shift towards sustainable tourism, emphasizing the importance of attracting repeat visitors. The party advocates for an end to all-inclusive resorts, as they do not benefit local businesses like taxi drivers and restaurant owners. Instead, TpK calls for an aggressive marketing campaign targeting the U.S. market, with a focus on combining vacations in Curaçao and Aruba. The introduction of a ferry between the islands is also part of this vision.
Regarding the gambling industry, TpK supports the Gaming Control Board maintaining oversight but insists that the Board must improve its enforcement capabilities. The party is awaiting new legislation to strengthen the Board's powers.
On the Isla refinery, TpK supports a deal with the U.S. company Santa Fe, arguing that the company has been unfairly excluded from the opportunity. They also suggest that the refinery is a political issue and needs a pragmatic solution.
The party sees potential for economic growth in sectors like agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and industry through cooperatives. They also highlight the potential of recycling industries, suggesting that waste and even chicken manure could be turned into energy.
Foreign Relations
TpK believes that Curaçao should not sever ties with Venezuela under the Maduro regime. The party asserts that this is a geopolitical matter and that the island should engage in peaceful exchanges with Venezuela, including allowing Venezuelans to visit Curaçao and vice versa.
Sustainability and Environment
On sustainable energy, TpK is committed to meeting international standards, promoting the use of clean energy sources such as wind, solar, and waste-to-energy solutions. They also propose exporting recycled materials and collaborating with Aruba and Bonaire to enhance waste management efforts.
The party also emphasizes the need for stronger animal welfare policies and improved environmental protections, including the implementation of deposit systems for recycling and better regulation of pollution.
Urban Development and Housing
TpK believes the pace of new construction projects, including hotels and resorts, should be carefully controlled to avoid damaging the island's natural beauty. The party advocates for revising the Island Development Plan (EOP), which they argue is outdated and lacks clear direction.
In terms of housing, TpK calls for reforms to the FKP housing program, suggesting that rent prices should be regulated by law and that the government should provide more land for long-term leasehold properties.
Education and Healthcare
TpK's education reforms include recognizing teachers as front-line workers and introducing specialized curricula for students interested in sports, culture, music, and entrepreneurship. The party also calls for smaller class sizes, more teaching staff, and more support for teachers to complete their higher education.
In healthcare, TpK emphasizes that the government must continue funding the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC), as it is constitutionally required to provide healthcare services. The party also advocates for medical tourism but points out that no solid business case has been made for this initiative.
Combating Corruption
TpK is committed to fighting corruption at all levels of government. The party calls for stricter regulations and better enforcement, particularly in the areas of public tenders, appointments, and construction permits. They believe that improving the functioning of the public sector will reduce corruption.
Financing the Plan
To fund these ambitious proposals, TpK argues that the government must focus on properly allocating the island's financial resources. The party claims that Curaçao has always had the funds available, but that these funds have not been used efficiently. A more responsible approach to budgeting is essential, according to TpK.
With these proposals, Trabou pa Korsou seeks to provide a vision of a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for Curaçao. As the election approaches, the party hopes to garner support for these reforms, which they believe are necessary for the island's long-term success.
