The hunt for drug operations in the Caribbean is ramping up

THE HAGUE - The 'Future agenda for an international offensive against organized crime' that the Dutch Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius sent to the House of Representatives of the Netherlands pays ample attention to the Caribbean part of the kingdom.

The report indicates that Defense (Commander of the Navy in the Caribbean) and the Caribbean Coast Guard are investigating the intensification of operational cooperation with the maritime authorities in Colombia with the aim of intercepting drug shipments 'upstream'.

There is also the deployment of a flexible 'police port liaison' to improve cooperation with ports in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the deployment of FIOD investigators and KMar employees in the Caribbean. Customs is also currently recruiting liaisons who will be posted to Dutch embassies in Latin America, among other places.

The information nodes in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom will be strengthened, so that local operational investigation information is better shared regionally.

Undermining programs have been drawn up with the partners, in particular with the Dutch representations abroad, which, based on phenomenon analyses, give direction to the joint strategy in certain regions and countries. These programs are closely aligned with Dutch foreign policy and the annual plans of the relevant missions abroad. The first step in this direction is currently being taken by drawing up and implementing the Latin America and the Caribbean Program Plan.
