Space for 2 extra telecommunication companies

WILLEMSTAD - There is room for two new players in the Curaçao telecom market. That was announced by the Minister of Transport, Traffic and Urban Planning, Charles Cooper who also believes that Curaçao is ready for the challenges that telecommunications entail.

According to Cooper, Curaçao is already connected to 7 international cable connections that extend to China. There are still a few bottlenecks when it comes to internet. So much has become clear during COVID-19 pandemic, the minister says.

The minister would have already conducted conversations with new possible internet providers and wants to open up the market for new players as promised. The moratorium for the mobile telephony market has now expired, so there is now room for competition.

From a technical point of view, things must still be investigated, the minister says. The idea is also to enter more underground fiber optic. The minister so far is satisfied with the internet speed that is offered to business customers. For private customers it can be a lot better, Cooper believes.
