WILLEMSTAD - The climate committee for schools held a meeting this morning with school boards and unions to discuss heat in classrooms. The committee was established to find sustainable solutions to the problem of extreme temperatures in classrooms. In recent months, schools have received funding; with this money, they have purchased coolers, fans, plants, and air conditioning units. Some educational institutions have also adjusted students' uniforms. According to Education Minister Van Heydoorn, 1.5 million guilders are available this year to combat classroom heat.
The climate committee indicates that they currently view the use of split-unit air conditioners in classrooms as the most feasible solution to the problem of heat in the classroom. However, a solution needs to be found for the additional costs associated with modifications to the power supply and the increased electricity consumption. All school boards support the installation of air conditioning in their schools, and efforts are currently underway.
