THE HAGUE - The Schoof Cabinet has announced plans to bolster the security of the Caribbean part of the Kingdom in response to growing regional and global threats. In a newly released 'Defense Note 2024: Strong, Smart, and Together,' presented by Minister Brekelmans and State Secretary Tuinman of Defense, measures aimed at strengthening both defense coordination and infrastructure protection were outlined. 

The Defense Note emphasizes the need for increased preparedness in the face of potential military conflicts that could impact both the Netherlands and its Caribbean territories through hybrid and physical attacks. "Defense must be better equipped to coordinate with civilian partners and contribute to the protection of strategic and vital infrastructure," the note stated. 

One of the key concerns highlighted is the instability in neighboring Venezuela, which poses a significant and unpredictable risk to the security of the islands. Additionally, organized crime and the growing influence of global powers such as China and Russia in the region are creating further challenges for the Caribbean territories. 

To address these concerns, the Caribbean Militias (CARMIL) will be reinforced, and steps will be taken to improve situational awareness through the acquisition of air warning systems and additional flight hours for aerial reconnaissance. These upgrades aim to enhance the defense and protection of the Caribbean territories while also improving coordination with the United States and other Kingdom nations. 

In response to escalating global tensions, particularly due to Russia's increased aggression, the cabinet has committed an additional 2.4 billion euros for the purchase of tanks, fighter jets, and frigates, underscoring the Netherlands' commitment to both its national and regional defense.
