Samira Rafaela and Rob Jetten at the end of February on the islands

THE HAGUE - A delegation consisting of the Member of European Parliament Samira Rafaela and the Dutch Member of Parliament Rob Jetten will visit the islands of Curaçao, St Maarten, St Eustatius and Saba from 21 February to 1 March.

As overseas countries and territories of the EU (OCTs), the islands within the Kingdom of the Netherlands have a special relationship with the European Union. Their residents are also EU citizens, who are represented in the European Parliament. Rafaela, mindful of her role as a member of that European Parliament, travels to the islands to see what role the EU currently plays here and where the ties with the EU can be further strengthened. Samira Rafaela has a long-term relationship with the islands, thanks to her Curaçao roots.

"It is always a pleasure for me if I can be a bridge between the European Parliament and the islands. When I can represent EU citizens in all parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. "

For Rob Jetten, this is an introductory visit to the islands, as the faction leader of a coalition party. Jetten also has the European affairs portfolio and a special interest in the state of education and the impact of climate change on the islands.

During the visit, the delegation wants to get a better picture of the future of the entire Kingdom. In doing so, they want to establish and strengthen ties with as many political and social sections as possible on the islands. As young parliamentarians in the Netherlands and Europe, Jetten and Rafaela see this mission as an excellent opportunity, together, to gain more insight into the interests and issues that play a role on the island. They keep an eye on the future. Young people in the kingdom must be able to feel the connection with the Netherlands and Europe. A visit from a Member of Parliament and a Member of the European Parliament can shape this.
