Sailing ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano in the port of Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD - the large Spanish sailing ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano is moored in the port of Curaçao. The Curaçao Sail Foundation is pleased with the visit of the ship, which calls at the Curaçao harbor for the second time after its first visit in 2006.

The four-masted ship is 113 meters long and was built in 1927 in Spain. It is the fourth largest four-masted in the world and almost as large as her "twin sister" the Esmeralda, which visited the island during Velas Latinoamérica Curaçao 2018.

"The ship is called Juan Sebastián de Elcano, a Spaniard from the Basque Country who sailed between 1519 and 1522 to search for spices together with Fernando Magallanes, and was the first to travel around the world," says the organization.

As the ship arrived on the eve of the carnival, the 150-person crew will participate in the carnival march. Dressed in white with a red handkerchief, the crew members will join the parade.
