Rejection of Education and Well-Being Motion by MFK and KEM Highlights Lack of Support for Teachers

Local | By Correspondent December 20, 2024

WILLEMSTAD – The recent rejection of a crucial motion concerning the education and well-being of teachers by the MFK and KEM factions underscores a troubling disinterest from the ruling parties in addressing the needs of this vital workforce. Parliamentarian Steven Croes of the PAR faction expressed deep disappointment over the decision, highlighting the negative impact on the education sector as Curaçao moves towards its 2025 budget.

Critical Motion Overlooked by Ruling Parties

During the budget deliberations for 2025, Croes lamented that the MFK and KEM factions voted against a motion submitted by the PAR and MAN factions. The motion aimed to implement significant reforms to improve working conditions and support for teachers and non-teaching staff within the education system.

Key Components of the Motion

The motion called for:

Establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Team: To be formed in the first quarter of 2025, this team would address all outstanding issues outlined in the Education Covenant (Onderwijsconvenant).

Proposal for a New Salary Structure: By December 31, 2025, a new compensation framework for teachers and non-teaching staff was to be developed, replacing the outdated system from the 1990s that has led to wage discrepancies and is deemed unsustainable.

Attention to Long-Standing Issues: Ensuring that key community members, including educators and future generations, receive the necessary attention and resources to address challenges that have persisted for years.

Implications of the Rejection

Croes emphasized that good working conditions are essential for the motivation and retention of both teachers and non-teaching staff. The failure to pass this motion leaves many professionals in the education sector feeling unsupported and demotivated, potentially leading to a decline in the quality of education provided to students.

Call for Change

Highlighting the dire situation, Croes stated, "It is very lamentable, and I cannot stop understanding how KEM and MFK voted against this motion. We all know that teachers are very demotivated at this time, along with all the consequences this brings. There needs to be a change in how the education sector is managed!"

Future Steps and Community Impact

The rejection of the motion not only hampers immediate efforts to improve the education system but also threatens the long-term development of Curaçao's youth. Without adequate support and fair compensation, the country risks losing valuable educators who play a crucial role in shaping future generations.
