Prime Minister aims to secure gas supply with Venezuela: plans MoU signing

WILLEMSTAD - In a recent New Year's message on behalf of the Pisas II cabinet, Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas of the MFK party revealed his intention to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a gas supply agreement between Venezuela and Curaçao.

The proposed MoU signifies a potential landmark agreement between the two nations, paving the way for enhanced energy cooperation. The specifics of the agreement are yet to be disclosed, but the emphasis on a gas supply arrangement suggests a strategic move to address energy needs on the island.

Moreover, Pisas outlined the government's ambition to finalize the process of Curaçao becoming an associate member of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) organization. This regional affiliation could bring economic and diplomatic benefits to Curaçao, fostering closer ties with neighboring Caribbean nations.

The government's multifaceted agenda includes the revival of the refinery, a key economic asset for Curaçao. Pisas reiterated the commitment to implementing agreements with Venezuela, particularly concerning outstanding debts owed by Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA).

Beyond energy and diplomatic endeavors, various ministries have charted their objectives for the coming year. The agenda encompasses crucial initiatives such as road maintenance and repair, underscoring the commitment to enhancing the island's infrastructure.

Continuing the construction of social housing remains a priority, aligning with efforts to address housing needs on the island. This commitment reflects a holistic approach to socio-economic development and community welfare.

In a bid to streamline administrative processes, the government aims to simplify the acquisition of one-year residence permits. This strategic move is intended to facilitate the recruitment of additional personnel across different roles within the justice chain, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial system.

As the Pisas administration unfolds its ambitious agenda, the proposed MoU for gas supply stands out as a potential catalyst for economic and energy development, signaling a renewed era of collaboration between Curaçao and Venezuela.
