WILLEMSTAD - In the early hours of Thursday, January 31, 2019, at the Sunscape Hotel, a short alcohol check took place by the police force Curaçao (KPC) with the cooperation of the Public Prosecution Service (OM) and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (KMar). Again, a breath-analysis device was used.
During the traffic check, two suspects blew respectively 535 and 415 micrograms of alcohol per exhaled air (UGL). That is more than the legally permitted amount of 220 UGL that can be achieved after drinking about two beer. The two suspects were immediately issued a summons for the criminal session of 11 February 2019 in the afternoon.
If they are convicted, they have a criminal record with this DUI. A crime according to the law. The criminal record of Curaçao is also immediately visible in the Netherlands. Because KPC and OM are trying to reverse the number of fatalities in traffic (in 2018 it was 18) and most of them are alcohol-related.
Alcohol inspections will be held frequently and on an irregular basis this year. This should also reduce the number of accidents involving injuries and material damage caused by the annually over 13,000 car accidents.
